STRENGTHENING URBAN MANAGEMENT INDIA

ASCI in partnership with WBI launched "Strengthening Urban Management" (SUM) Programme in January 2003, designed specifically to support capacity building in cities. The Programme seeks to provide city officials (senior urban development policy makers specially Commissioners and Mayors of Indian cities) with a platform to learn in great detail key aspects of urban management, and to develop innovative solutions to major issues confronting their cities.

The Programme covered five major, complementary modules:
  • Good Urban Governance and Decentralisation

  • Creating Creditworthy Cities and Urban Systems
  • Innovative Approaches to Delivery of Urban Environmental Services
  • Urban Poverty Reduction Strategies
  • Change Management

The programme adopts an interactive approach with a blend of lectures, case studies, video films, simulation exercises, exchange of experiences, and field visits. In addition, panel discussions involving leading experts and practitioners were organized to promote candid dialogue on contemporary issues of specific relevance to programme participants.

The ASCI-WBI SUM Programmes have been organized in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 in the month of January.
